Waterfowl hunters are being encouraged to take precautions to protect their health and the health of their dogs amid the presence of a Harmful Algal Bloom and Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in the state.

A Harmful Algal Bloom has been identified at Nutgrass Lake North on the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge near Fallon, according to a release from the Nevada Department of Wildlife.

NDOW also noted the presence of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in wild bird populations throughout the state.

The agency is warning hunters to check for current HAB advisories wherever they choose to hunt. If no advisory exists, hunters can look for indicators such as water that looks like paint or pea soup, a thick surface layer resembling foam or scum, or a foul or musty odor.
