A pedestrian was struck and killed in Mecca Friday evening by an SUV whose driver fled.

The crash was reported at 6:30 p.m. Friday on Grapefruit Boulevard near the 66th Avenue Bypass, according to the CHP.

The male victim was found lying on the right hand shoulder, a witness told the CHP.

It was not clear whether the victim was taken to a hospital before he died. Personnel from the Riverside County coroner’s office were summoned to the scene but an ambulance company said he was taken to a hospital.
