ALBANY — New York Attorney General Letitia A. James has been charged with mortgage fraud in federal court in Virginia — a move some are alleging is political retribution for her investigation into President Donald J. Trump and his New York-based businesses.

According to court documents filed on Thursday, James is alleged to have fraudulently filled out documents applying for a mortgage on a property in Virginia, indicating that she would use the property as a secondary, seasonal residence, when in fact she was using the property as an investment.
