Nicole Kidman has opened up about the "devastating" and "painful" changes in her life following her recent divorce from Keith Urban. The 58-year-old actress shared her thoughts in a candid interview released shortly after the news of her separation from the country music star, which has drawn significant attention in Hollywood.
In her remarks, Kidman emphasized the importance of facing difficult emotions. "There's something to knowing that no matter how painful, or how difficult, or how devastating something is, there is a way through," she said. She acknowledged that while the feelings can be overwhelming, it is essential to confront them. "You're going to have to feel it. You're not going to be able to numb it. You are going to have to feel it, and it's going to feel insurmountable at times," she added. Kidman reassured that with time, these feelings do pass, stating, "If you move gently and slowly – and it can take an enormous amount of time – it does pass."
The Oscar-winning actress reflected on the lessons learned through life's experiences. "The best part about life and getting older is the experiences you gain and the lessons those experiences can provide," she explained. Kidman noted that past experiences can help one navigate current challenges, saying, "So you go, 'Oh, I’ve been here before. I actually know how to handle this now.'"
Kidman, who was previously married to Tom Cruise from 1990 to 2001, expressed her desire to share her insights with others. "I want to be able to share and impart the things I've learned. I've seen a lot, I've experienced a lot, and I've survived a lot," she said. While she does not intend to dictate how others should live, she is willing to share her experiences. "People can take tidbits, because we all know you tell somebody to do something, and they’re going to do what they want to do anyway," she remarked.
In discussing what keeps her motivated, Kidman expressed gratitude for her life and her role as a mother. "I'm grateful to be surviving as a woman, as an actress, and as a producer, professionally and personally," she stated. She also highlighted her commitment to her children, saying, "(They give me the) purpose of being their protector and their guide, promising them that I'm here and that, no matter what, there's always a safe place to grow up in."
Kidman and Urban's split was confirmed on September 29, just one day before she filed for divorce after 19 years of marriage. Reports have since emerged suggesting that Urban may be dating two women, including his new guitarist, Maggie Baugh, and fellow country star Kelsea Ballerini, who has been described as a supportive friend during this challenging time for him.
