A hockey player's first year at the AHL level can be intimidating in a lot of ways, from the size and speed of the grown men on the ice, to the expectations of a new coaching staff, to simple things like where to live and how to get to the arena.

That was the case for several young Firebirds' players last year as a talented rookie class joined the team, expected to make an impact.
