The deciding game of the team’s first playoff series in decades was tied in the seventh inning, embroiled in controversy. A sellout crowd of nearly 50,000 was on the brink of a riot as the game had descended into chaos.

Then, José Bautista stepped into the batter’s box and cemented his status as a Jays icon with one powerful swing that was followed by a flip of his bat that would never be forgotten.

“I’m the lucky guy who was standing at the plate, but I’m glad that I came through,” Bautista said at his induction to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame this summer . “I’ll never forget that moment.”
