California Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation Friday designating the bigberry manzanita as the state shrub and the giant garter snake as the state snake, adding to the state’s collection of official symbols that reflect its unique ecosystems.
The bigberry manzanita, a shrub native almost entirely to California, was recognized through a bill from Assemblymember Steve Bennett of Ventura. Known for its resilience, the plant regenerates quickly after wildfires and its seeds germinate in response to fire, while its deep roots help prevent soil erosion in dry, nutrient-poor areas—a trait valuable in regions scarred by recent blazes.
