A massive tornado suddenly appeared on Friday at Chilika Lake in Odisha, causing panic among tourists strolling along the lake shore.
The swirling vortex formed southwest of the Devi Kalijai Temple while hundreds of visitors were exploring the lake.
Due to a sudden change in air pressure, the waterspout rose towards the sky for several minutes before gradually disappearing.
Many tourists captured the rare phenomenon on their mobile phones, and the videos quickly went viral on social media.
Locals refer to such waterspouts as ‘Hathisundha’, due to their resemblance to an elephant’s trunk.
Similar waterspouts had been observed in Chilika Lake in 2018 and 2019, but this instance was larger and more clearly visible.
