LA PLATA COUNTY, Colo. —

Immediate evacuations have been ordered for portions of La Plata County, Colorado, after heavy rains have led to flooding in the area.

La Plata County spokesperson Sarah Jacobson says 383 homes north of Vallecito Lake have been evacuated. She says the area north of Vallecito Reservoir is the primary concern for first responders.

"One home, people didn't want to evacuate and then the water got higher and higher. Then their driveway flooded and then they decided they'd like to evacuate," Jacobson said. "Well it makes it a lot harder to evacuate when your roadway's got water on it."

Bayfield High School has been opened as a shelter location for people affected by the evacuation. The school is located at 800 Co Road 501 in Bayfield.
