A massive bomb detonated during the Conservative Party conference in the UK, killing five people on October 12, 1984.

The time bomb also injured 34 people at the Grand Hotel in Brighton, where the conference was being held.

The bomb was planted by members of the Irish Republican Army (IRA), who had the intention of killing Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and members of her government.

By pure chance, Thatcher was completely unharmed.

But had she been in the bathroom of her suite, as she had been two minutes earlier, she may well have been killed.

The long-delay time bomb had been planted four weeks earlier by IRA bombmaker Patrick Magee.

Assuming Thatcher would be staying on a higher floor at the hotel, he booked room 629 on the sixth floor.
