China has strongly criticized the United States for its recent decision to impose an additional 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods, calling it an example of "double standards." This statement came from an unnamed spokesperson of China's Ministry of Commerce on Sunday.
The announcement of the tariffs was made by President Donald Trump on Friday, citing concerns over new Chinese export restrictions on rare-earth minerals. These tariffs are set to take effect on November 1. Trump also indicated the possibility of canceling an upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, scheduled for later this month.
In response, the Chinese government accused the US of escalating economic tensions since September, stating that these measures have significantly harmed China's interests and disrupted the atmosphere for trade discussions. The Ministry of Commerce remarked, "Threatening high tariffs at every turn is not the right approach to engaging with China." This ongoing trade dispute continues to strain relations between the two economic giants, raising concerns about the future of their trade negotiations.
