From the window of the office of Kylie Rogers, the chief executive of the Victoria Racing Club, we look out on lawnmowers carefully tending the grass on Flemington’s home straight.

Preparations for the Melbourne Cup Carnival are in their final stages but right now Rogers is planning to turn the hallowed turf into a dance floor after the last race on Champions Stakes Day.

“After the last race, once the headline act is on the stage, we’re going to drop the rails and let everyone onto the course to dance,” Rogers says.

The turf is due to be replaced so turning it into a giant dance floor for DJ Fisher is all part of Rogers’ plan to focus on entertainment and, in particular, music at this year’s Melbourne Cup carnival.
