The Smithsonian Institution museums and the National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute have temporarily closed due to the government shutdown.

Because the museums and the zoo are part of the federal government — and had not been funded for the upcoming fiscal year before the shutdown began Oct. 1 — they cannot remain open during the shutdown.

The Smithsonian Institution said it was using prior-year funds to remain open for the first 11 days of the shutdown.
