Federal officials have released a statement after Senators Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth were denied entry for a tour of the Broadview ICE processing facility.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said the denial occurred because of the ongoing government shutdown, which the Trump administration has repeatedly blamed Democrats for.
"Unfortunately, they chose to shut down the government and this is a US government facility,” DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in the statement. “Once they open up the government and follow the proper protocols, we are more than happy to facilitate a tour."
Durbin and Duckworth were both denied entry to the facility on Friday, and were both critical of DHS and ICE.
