It's been a busy day in the world of college football as far as job openings go, and we can add yet another head coaching vacancy to the list.

On Sunday afternoon, the University of Alabama at Birmingham Blazers announced that they are officially parting ways with head coach Trent Dilfer, who was in his third season as the head coach. In his time with the Blazers, Dilfer was just 9-21, failing to make a bowl game in either of his two complete seasons.

The final straw was UAB's 53-33 loss to Florida Atlantic on Saturday, which dropped the Blazers to 2-4 on the season. This was the third consecutive loss for UAB, and the schedule going forward does not look to be getting any easier, with a game against the No. 22 Memphis Tigers this next week, followed by games against the North Texas Mean Green and No. 19 USF Knights at the end of the season.

Dilfer, a former Super Bowl-winning quarterback with the Baltimore Ravens, has had a successful coaching career since retiring from the NFL, going 44-10 at Lipscomb Academy in the high school level before taking the job at UAB. Dilfer coached the Mustangs to back-to-back state championships in 2021 and 2022.

Dilfer is the third major head coach to get canned on Sunday, with the other two being Oregon State Beavers' HC Trent Bray, and Penn State Nittany Lions' HC James Franklin. There are now nine open FBS head coaching jobs, midway through the month of October.
