YAVAPAI COUNTY, Ariz. —

Two 19-year-old hikers had a close call over the weekend just outside of Camp Verde, Arizona.

They had begun their trip Thursday and had not returned the next day. One of them sent a text around 2 p.m. Friday, reporting that they were caught in a flash flood at West Clear Creek and had to climb up a canyon to escape.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office deputies found the hikers' vehicle at the trailhead, but severe weather prevented an aerial search on Friday.

A ground search involving YCSO deputies and search and rescue teams began at daybreak Saturday. At 9 a.m., deputies were able to text with the girls. Their location was shared with the search and rescue teams, who were able to locate the hikers, who were wet and cold but otherwise OK.
