Trump Declares End of Gaza War Amid Hostage Swap

US President Donald Trump has announced that the war in Gaza is over, coinciding with a significant ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. This declaration comes as Trump embarks on a diplomatic trip to Israel and Egypt, where he aims to solidify peace efforts in the region.

While speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump stated, "The war is over. Okay? You understand that?" He expressed confidence in the ceasefire, saying, "I think it's going to hold. I think people are tired of it. It's been centuries."

The ceasefire deal includes a hostage-prisoner swap, allowing the return of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas during the conflict that began with the October 7, 2023, attack. In exchange, nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners will be released from Israeli jails. Trump is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the families of the hostages during his visit.

Trump's trip is also marked by a summit in Egypt, where he will gather with leaders from over 20 countries to discuss the future of Gaza. He praised Netanyahu, calling him a "wartime president" and noted that any disputes between them were quickly resolved.

The conflict has resulted in significant casualties, with over 67,000 Palestinians reported dead and extensive destruction in Gaza. The United Nations has indicated that there has been progress in humanitarian aid operations since the ceasefire began.

As part of his peace plan, Trump mentioned the establishment of a new governing body for Gaza, which he would lead, although he acknowledged the challenges ahead, including Hamas's disarmament and Israel's military presence in the region. He also hinted at a potential visit to Gaza in the future, stating, "I would be proud to. I'd like to put my feet on it at least."

This diplomatic effort marks a pivotal moment in the ongoing conflict, with hopes for lasting peace in the region.
