Kansas City, Mo. — The Detroit Lions ran one of their most ambitious trick plays ever in the first quarter of their "Sunday Night Football" matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs, and it worked to perfection.

Until the officials got involved.

Facing a fourth-and-goal at the 1-yard line of Kansas City, Detroit had running back David Montgomery at quarterback in a wildcat formation. Quarterback Jared Goff motioned into the flat and caught a bubble screen from Montgomery, coralling the ball on a bobble before plowing his way into the end zone for a score and the 6-0 lead.

But as kicker Jake Bates was executing the extra point, officials came in to blow the play dead, and then dropped a penalty flag on Detroit for an infraction during the penalty. Goff was penalized for an illegal motion, n
