KANSAS CITY, MO – Free Press sports writer Dave Birkett grades the Detroit Lions ’ performance after their 30-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Oct. 12, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Jared Goff played a solid game despite losing to Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs for the first time in his career. Goff completed 23 of 29 passes for 203 yards, with one drop by Amon-Ra St. Brown and a couple throwaways under pressure. He made a beautiful tight-window throw to Jameson Williams for a first-quarter touchdown and used his legs to pick up a third-and-4 in the second quarter. Goff’s biggest mistake was a motion penalty that nullified his trick-play TD catch, though he indicated neither he nor coaches knew the interpretation officials used to penalize the play
