The sequel trilogy may not have appealed to every Star Wars fan, but there were plenty of narrative threads that were exciting and worth expanding upon beyond what we get to see in the movies, particularly those relating to returning characters from the original three films.
Whilst many felt that Luke's fate, and what he had been up to in the intervening period after defeating Palpatine and the Empire, was mishandled, Leia's arc was better received, and showed her immense qualities as a character as she got older.
Her connection to Rey as a character was explored, but adding more depth to that relationship would actually be quite an exciting step forward for both of their developments, and in very good news, that's what we are about to get.
