People who are not animal lovers are more likely to have character traits commonly associated with psychopaths, according to a new study.

Researchers in Serbia said people who exhibit dark personalities, such as impulsivity, constant lying and acting in a superficial manner, may be more likely to dominate or even injure vulnerable creatures.

“Violence toward animals has been related to domestic violence and murder,” University of Belgrade researchers said in the paper, Britain’s _Daily Mail_ reported.

The study, published in _Current Psychology_, “sought to investigate the relationship between the Dark Tetrad traits (narcissism, psychopathy, Machiavellianism and sadism) and attitudes toward non-human animals.”
