India’s retail inflation dropped sharply to 1.545 in September 2025, the lowest level since June 2017, as prices of key food items such as vegetables, pulses, fruits and edible oils declined further, according to the National Statistical Office (NSO) data released on Monday. The consumer price index (CPI)-based inflation eased from 2.07% in August and stood significantly below the 5.49% recorded in September 2024. The data showed that both headline inflation and food inflation registered notable declines during the month, aided by a favourable base effect and continuing moderation in food prices.
