The ongoing hostility between Afghanistan and Pakistan is yet another blow to the fantasy of a unified ummah. It lays bare one fundamental truth: Nationalism always wins. It is evident that religion cannot be the basis for nationhood. That’s the enduring flaw in the philosophical foundation of the Pakistani state.
