Sharjeel Imam has been in jail since January 2020

Sharjeel Imam, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots case, has filed an interim bail application in Delhi's Karkardooma Court seeking release to contest the Bihar Assembly elections.

Imam, a student activist, is accused of inciting communal violence during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in February 2020, which left 54 people dead and over 700 injured.

He has been in jail since January 2020, and the Delhi High Court had refused regular bail on September 2.

In his bail plea, Imam requested release for 14 days from October 15 to October 29, citing the need to file his nomination and campaign as an independent candidate from the Bahadurganj assembly seat in Kishanganj district.
