WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The driver of a car will face charges after authorities say he crashed into a pedestrian bridge late Sunday night.
It happened just before midnight at the bridge just southwest of Harry Street and Woodlawn Boulevard. The pedestrian bridge is over a drainage canal connecting Funston Street and Fabrique Drive.
A 911 caller reported seeing the car go airborne and crash into the bridge, where it became wedged. The caller said the vehicle had also caught on fire.
The Wichita Fire Department said multiple crews were called to the scene due to the complexity of the crash. Firefighters extinguished the fire from a distance because of concerns about the structural integrity of the footbridge.
