The Cuban opposition leader and political prisoner José Daniel Ferrer García is arriving in Miami after he was forced into exile, according to his brother and Cuban officials.
His flight is expected to arrive at Miami International Airport at around 12:30 p.m.
Ferrer García, leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba (UNPACU), one of the Communist-run country’s largest and most active opposition groups, announced in a letter last week that he had decided to leave the country after years of being subjected to “brutal beatings, torture, humiliations, threats even on my life and other cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment” behind bars.
According to Ferrer García, the constant harassment on behalf of the country’s law enforcement led him to “accept the departure into exile.”
