The Testament of Ann Lee is a drama — with some musical components, apparently — about the real-life founders of the Shakers. And I must warn you about two things: It was co-written by the same couple who did The Brutalist , which I hated, although this time Mona Fastvold directed instead of Brady Corbet; and, let me quote Wikipedia on this second point: As Ann Lee birthed four children who all died in infancy, Fastvold sought to depict the births “as real and direct and graphic and unapologetic as possible”. Fastvold acquired prosthetic vaginas for the birthing scenes. I mean, I’m out. I didn’t even watch the childbirth video at my own prep class, because I saw one in ninth grade health and that was enough. I could not be less interested in seeing it happen ever again, even fiction
