CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cuyahoga County jury is expected to decide this week whether Bionca Ellis was legally sane when authorities say she fatally stabbed 3-year-old Julian Wood last year.
Testimony in the aggravated murder trial began last week before Common Pleas Judge John Russo and included witness accounts from officers, bystanders, medical experts and Julian’s mother, Margot Wood, who was injured in the random attack.
Ellis has acknowledged that she is responsible for killing Julian, according to her attorneys. They are attempting to prove at trial that mental illness prevented Ellis from knowing right from wrong.
She has a history of schizophrenia and, following her arrest, required treatment at a state hospital to restore her competency to stand trial.
