San Diego Padres manager Mike Shildt has announced his retirement today. Shildt, who just finished his second season at the helm for San Diego, cited the “severe toll” the baseball season had on him “mentally, physically and emotionally.”
Shildt managed the Padres for the 2024 and 2025 seasons, finishing second in the National League West and making the playoffs each season. San Diego lost in the NLDS in 2024 to the eventual champion Los Angeles Dodgers, and were knocked out by the Cubs in the Wild Card round this year.
This is the third straight manager the Padres have had who is being replaced after two seasons. Jayce Tingler managed the team in 2020-21 and was fired after the 2021 season. He was replaced by Bob Melvin, who managed the team in 2022 (when they advanced to the NLCS) and
