A global study published in The Lancet has found that while overall death rates have fallen by 67% worldwide, mortality among young adults has not declined at the same pace, largely due to suicide, drug overdoses, and excessive alcohol use.
The findings come from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 report, which analysed data from around 3,10,000 sources and involved over 14,000 researchers and experts globally.
According to the study, China recorded the highest number of deaths in 2023 at 10.7 million, followed by India (9.85 million) and the United States (over 3 million). However, when adjusted for population, India ranked 73rd in death rate, while China and the US stood at 166th and 160th, respectively.
