UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA-DAVIS, Calif. —

California is no stranger to natural disasters, and this week the state is helping residents prepare for not if, but when, the next big quake hits.

The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is rolling through the state with the Great California ShakeOut Tour, a mobile earthquake simulator that recreates shaking comparable to a magnitude 7.0 tremor.

The tour began Monday at UC Davis on the West Quad near Memorial Union and will finish Thursday in San Diego. Organizers said the goal is to help people understand what a major quake can feel like and what to expect in the moments that follow, all while offering guidance on readiness at home and at work.
