GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – The state environmental service is temporarily closing shellfish harvest beds across Georgetown County on Monday.

Shellfish harvesting beds in Georgetown County will be temporarily closed on Monday following a period of excessive rainfall, according to the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES).

The closure is set to start at sunset for all beds in Shellfish Management Area 05, including North Inlet and Winyah Bay.

Over 11 inches of rain fell over the City of Georgetown through the weekend as a nor’easter covered the region.

Affected beds will be reopened once water quality data shows bacteria levels are suitable to harvest shellfish, SCDES Shellfish Sanitation Section Manager Mike Marshal said.
