The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is looking into the death of 67-year-old Chatham County jail inmate.

On Oct. 10, Chatham County Detention Center medical staff provided aid to Anthony Garza, who complained of abdominal pain around 8:30 p.m. Several hours later, medical personnel determined Garza needed transport to Memorial Health University Medical Center for further medical attention.

While EMS was en route to the jail around 11:30 p.m., Garza was found unresponsive in his cell by Chatham County detention staff. Lifesaving measures were unsuccessful and Garza was pronounced dead.

Garza was known to have had pre-existing medical conditions and was classified as homeless. The Chatham County Sheriff's Office is seeking his next of kin.
