BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Former Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has announced he will not run for the U.S. Senate.

Edwards made the announcement on social media in the following statement:

Edwards previously had a call and met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about a potential run for the Senate, according to a report from The New York Times. However, during that call, the former governor reportedly told Schumer to follow up in August.

Current U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, Louisiana State Senator Blake Miguez, Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming, and St. Tammany Parish Councilwoman Kathy Seiden have all announced plans to run.

In total, nine Republicans have filed paperwork to be in the party’s primary. So far, no Democrats have filed paperwork to enter the race for their party
