WAVERLY, Iowa (KCRG) — Eastern Iowa farmers are advocating for continued use of the weed-killing chemical Glyphosate as health advocates urge lawmakers to pause the use of the pesticide nationwide, claiming it’s linked to cancer.

Mark Mueller, who has farmed outside Waverly for three decades, said the chemical glyphosate is essential to his operation.

“We don’t dump chemicals on the ground just for the fun of it,” Mueller said.

Glyphosate is one of the most commonly used pesticides in the United States, found in everything from backyard gardens to fields of corn and soybeans. While the Environmental Protection Agency has determined the chemical to be safe, the Public Interest Research Group or PIRG , has partnered with other health advocacy groups to petition the federal governmen
