DALLAS, Texas — Residents of The Mercantile, a historic high-rise in downtown Dallas, say they’re living in limbo after learning their leases have been terminated.

They say that what’s left behind is a building that smells, leaks, and appears to be unsecured.

The move-out order came after an Oct. 2 water leak and electrical short that management later said caused far more damage than first understood.

Emails obtained by WFAA show residents were told the building would remain closed indefinitely and that each unit would be opened to increase airflow. Management promised on-site security and restricted access.

But tenant Jacqueline Kolski said she’s seen the opposite.

“As you can see, there’s nobody at the front desk. Absolutely nothing,” she said.
