Many stars have been paying tribute to Diane Keaton following her passing ... and her hometown of Santa Ana, California, is following suit.

Santa Ana Mayor Valerie Amezcua tells TMZ ... she will be asking for a street topper right by Santa Ana High School. She also tells us she plans on closing the next city council meeting in Keaton's honor. Play video content

Keaton graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1963 before moving to New York to start her legendary show business career.
