LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - This weekend, hundreds of people will gather at Holmes Lake as part of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. The event will raise awareness and funds to fight the disease and at the event, several women who have fought with breast cancer or are previvors will share their stories. While they are called Portraits of Hope, they make up just a piece of the mosaic that is breast cancer.

Lincoln woman Carol Mack was 63 when she went in for a regular scan. The results turned up invasive ductal carcinoma for the retiring educator.

“When you’re at the end of your career, and ready to seek retirement and ready to live the life of being out there and doing things, you know, that will fulfill you more personally and professionally, it was a shock,” she recounted.
