The contaminated North River property now has secured funding for remediation efforts that are not expected to cost the city of Fort Wayne.
The Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission Monday unanimously approved a $500,000 loan from its capital expense fund for remediation work that will be reimbursed by state grants.
Fort Wayne in 2017 bought the North River property, a 29-acre plot along the St. Marys River that is bound by Clinton, Harrison and Fourth streets. The land has been used as a rail yard, junkyard and scrap yard.
The property been vacant since 1998, but much of the soil is contaminated with metals and petroleum left behind, officials have said.
