JACKSON COUNTY, Ga. — Seven people died in a fiery crash on I-85 North in Jackson County on Monday afternoon, according to Georgia State Patrol.
Troopers responded to a six-vehicle pileup on the interstate just south of mile marker 147 a little after 4 p.m. to the scene.
GSP said a semi-trailer was following to closely a Dodge van and hit it from the rear.
The crash caused a chain reaction, leading to other vehicles being hit. The Dodge van, however, was engulfed by flames. The seven people inside were pronounced dead at the scene, GSP said. Credit: WXIA
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office warned drivers earlier in the evening that traffic was being diverted at exit 140 due to the crash that had shut down all northbound lanes.
GSP said the crash is still under investigation.
