Lansing — Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, a Democrat who's running to be Michigan's next attorney general, is asking other candidates in the race to join in signing a pledge against politically-motivated prosecutions.

McDonald planned to publicly announce the initiative Tuesday, titling the document, "Michigan trumps politics pledge."

In an interview, she said the idea for the pledge was sparked by the recent actions of Republican President Donald Trump, who, on Sept. 20, issued a social media post seemingly calling on U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi to prosecute James Comey, the former FBI director. Five days later, Comey was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly lying to Congress.
