One of Oregon’s toughest post players is headed south down the west coast to play college basketball.

On Monday evening, South Medford’s Mayenabasi Akpan announced on social media that she is verbally committing to San Diego State.

A 6-foot-2 post, Akpan has become one of the state’s most feared players in the paint over the past couple of years.

Akpan may have been the breakout player of the year in the 2023-24 basketball season, helping lead South Medford to a 26-3 record and the Class 6A state championship as a sophomore.

In Akpan’s first game in the Chiles Center (a 56-24 win against Southridge in the state quarterfinals) Akpan recorded a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Through the 2024 state championships, she averaged 17 rebounds per game.
