A major police operation unfolded in Brisbane’s CBD after a man was spotted brandishing what witnesses described as a large hunting knife inside the City Botanic Gardens.

Emergency services were called to the popular inner-city park shortly after 2.30pm, with Queensland Police swiftly locking down the area and ordering visitors to leave.

Specialist officers, including members of the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT), surrounded the gardens as negotiators attempted to speak with the man.

Police confirmed that the park was fully evacuated and remains closed, with the public urged to stay away from the precinct while the situation continues.

Paramedics were stationed nearby as a precaution, although authorities said no injuries had been reported.
