Organizers who help with Louisville's Senior Nutrition Program , which offers free meals to elderly residents in need, knew a budget shortfall was coming. Programs like Meals on Wheels have seen an increase in participants in recent years, and the finish line for additional federal funding provided amid the COVID-19 pandemic has been in sight for a while.
Still, officials with the Kentuckiana Regional Planning & Development Agency said they'd been led to believe additional funding would come. Now, after receiving a memo from a state department last month that said more money would not be available due to an estimated budget shortfall of more than $300 million, organizers are scrambling for answers.
