As a young pipsqueak growing up on a dairy farm, one of my jobs in the summertime after morning milking was to chase our herd of 45 Holsteins out the long cow lane to the far pasture.
The lane ran right beside the road and went up over a hill that blocked the view of the distant pasture and woodlot from the farmstead. It also ran by a neighbor’s house where, on this one morning when I was about 8, several boys were out playing baseball.
