New Delhi: The World Health Organisation has raised a red flag, citing rising cases of drug-resistant bacterial infections in the world. According to a new WHO report released on Monday, one in six bacterial infections confirmed in laboratories during 2023 showed resistance to antibiotics, making once-curable diseases increasingly difficult — and sometimes impossible — to treat.
“These findings are deeply concerning,” said Dr. Yvan J-F. Hutin, head of the WHO’s antimicrobial resistance department. “As antibiotic resistance grows, our treatment options shrink — and lives are being put at serious risk.”
