It’s sticker shock, over and over again.

The grocery store. Your utility bill.

And your homeowners insurance.

Nearly half of the state’s 127 homeowners insurance companies have asked New Jersey for rate hikes this year — with nearly a dozen asking for double-digit increases. More than 50 received a thumb’s up from regulators.

St. Paul Protective Insurance Company, owned by Travelers, asked for the biggest hike at 40%, but it was approved for less than half that at 19.8%.

The largest rate increase approval was granted to Founders Insurance. It asked for — and received — a 23.6% increase.

The next largest approval went to Farmers Property and Casualty. It received a 21.6% hike after asking for 30.7%.

The companies did not respond to request for comment.
