The Lake Erie water snake was once on the endangered and threatened species list. It's native to Kelleys Island and North, Middle and South Bass Islands.

The Lake Erie water snake can grow up to 3.5 feet and features dark coloring on top and pale white or yellow on the bottom.

The snakes are not venomous but can draw blood with their bite if threatened by humans.

This snake that was once a threatened species may not be Ohio's largest or one of the Buckeye State's three venomous species , but it does play "a vital role in the ecosystem" by targeting invasive species, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR).
