FAYETTE COUNTY, Ind. —

A remarkable discovery in eastern Indiana is shedding light on the region's ancient past.

The Fayette County Coroner's Office announced Monday that human remains found along the Whitewater River are more than 4,200 years old.

The remains were originally found on June 2 and were reported to the Fayette County Sheriff's Department.

After running preliminary testing, including radiocarbon dating, experts were able to determine that a portion of a human skull found at the site dates back to 2300 B.C., which makes it approximately 4,270 years old.

Coroner Eddie Richardson said the finding adds "a profound historical layer" to the community.
