The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Maria Corina Machado in recognition “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

A longtime champion of democracy in socialist Venezuela, Machado ran as a presidential candidate in her country’s 2023 primaries but was disqualified by the Venezuelan government for 15 years.

Machado was banned for what the European Parliament described as “arbitrary and politically fabricated” reasons.
